Making Waves
We have barely dipped our toes in 2008 and already it's looking like another banner year for the Green Party. Our party was the big political success story of 2007 and, judging by the first polls of the New Year, we are going to make even bigger waves in 2008. Even more important than the Green Party's steady climb in the polls is the fact that it is now an important participant in the national policy debate, especially when it comes to the most pressing issue of our time – the climate crisis. Last year, we called for a $50/tonne carbon tax as part of a suite of measures designed to shift our economy towards a low-carbon energy future. Earlier this month, the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy released its report to the government on fighting global warming. Its main recommendation – a carbon tax. It goes without saying that Mr. Harper and his gang of obstructionists immediately rejected the idea. Some things don't change, whatever year it is. Happy new year. |
